Past exhibition: Making the Invisible Visible

Exhibition text
'Making the invisible visible', a solo exhibition by Lucy Rose on Wednesday 2nd April 2025. The main focus of the exhibition is as the title suggests, to make the invisible visible by telling the stories hidden within us. This work attests to Rose's long held interest in visceral imagery of anatomy and the body. Rose is drawn to this imagery because it feels so familiar yet foreign. Which brings up questions of, what is hidden away by her own flesh? What happens when organs are on display in unflattering ways exploring self destruction, hidden illnesses, abuse and mental health?
Some of Rose's inspirations have come from the artists Eva Fabregas and her use of organic forms to transform a space, Lindsey Mendick and her use of clay and ceramics to create realistic and unique sculptures, Damien Hirst and Marc Quinn.
Rose's sculptures deliberately seek out the discomfort in the audiences reaction, because we all have the same organs, so why does looking at them make us so uncomfortable? This question is amplified when she explores issues such as smoking and alcoholism which affects so many. Rose aims to gain some answers to these questions to these questions through this exhibition featuring her grotesque but beautiful artworks.
''I like the theme of the human condition, life and death, no matter the backlash'' Lucy Rose
The exhibition includes painting, sculpture and ceramics. The clay sculptures are painted with realistic flesh, blood and sinew tones, with added attention to disease and decomposition. They are difficult to look at and we are confronted by our own fragility and our own mortality. Forcing you to face the real truth that's usually within.
